Dr. Robert Handy is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons, and specializes in sports medicine and trauma, including state-of-the-art arthroscopic surgery on shoulders and knees. He is an active member with multiple organizations including the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, Doylestown Hospital and the Bucks County Medical Society.
He received his undergraduate degree from Villanova University, and his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine. After graduating from medical school, Captain Robert W. Handy, M.D. launched a 14-year career in the United States Army, completing his Transitional Internship at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas in 1990. He attended flight surgeons school at Fort Rucker, Alabama before serving for two years as a flight surgeon in the Republic of Korea.
Dr. Handy returned to El Paso for his orthopedic residency. He trained at both William Beaumont Army Medical Center and Thomason Hospital of the Texas Tech University Health System. While in Texas, he was promoted to the rank of Major. He served the next four years as a general orthopedic surgeon in Heidelberg, Germany. He was a member of the 43rd MASH and served in the Balkans in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. During his time in Europe, Dr. Handy completed an AO International Fellowship in Shoulder Surgery at St. George's Hospital in London.
As a Lieutenant Colonel, Dr. Handy undertook a yearlong fellowship in hip and knee replacement surgery at the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia. Following his fellowship he instructed orthopedic residents for two years at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. While stationed in Washington State, Lt. Col. Handy commanded the 102nd Forward Surgical Team. He later deployed with his unit to Kandahar, Afghanistan. He retired from the Army as a Colonel on 1 Oct 2017 after 25 years of service.
Dr. Handy joined Bucks County Orthopedic Specialists in 2004 and is located at both the Doylestown and Warrington offices.
Dr. Handy was born in Doylestown Hospital and enjoys continuing to live and work in the town where he was born. In his spare time, he enjoys running and has participated in the Paris marathon twice, the Rome marathon and marathons on both the east and west coast of the United States. Dr. Handy is also a member of the Calvary Church in Souderton, PA and has traveled with fellow church members on medical missions to Nepal.
